Winter Folk Camp
The Haliburton County Folk Society invites you to join us for a long weekend (Friday afternoon to Monday afternoon), one of a kind Folk Music experience for adults in the Haliburton Highlands. Winter Folk Camp II is very similar to our first Camp in March of 2009 except that Camp II is one day longer. We have also added another “stream” by providing beginner and advanced guitar classes.
The Camp is again being held at YMCA Wanakita near Haliburton, Ontario and is intended to be a late winter, affordable get-away with lots of music (concerts, classes, workshops, song circles, jamming and so on) in pleasant wooded surroundings with wonderful camaraderie, comfortable accommodations and great food.

The program has been designed to engage novice players, more experienced musicians and interested, but not particularly musical, Folk Music devotees. A weekend with us and those dreaded February "blahs" will be banished for another year!
The Winter Folk Camp program includes classes and workshops on Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon and on Monday morning
There will be evening concerts/ceilidhs on Saturday and Sunday featuring our Artists in Residence and showcasing some of our wonderful local talent.
Time has been left for a variety of complimentary outside activities (cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking etc.) and for jamming, snoozing or anything else you may wish to do.
Artists in Residence
We have engaged a group of talented and committed musicians who share our passion for providing our guests with the best musical experience we can. Their involvement in the camp extends beyond their classes, workshops and concerts and they look forward to sharing their time at Camp with you.

Linda Morrison
Community Folk Choir
One of Canada's best and most multi-faceted singer-songwriters."Those are the words one journalist used to describe Montreal folk performer Linda Morrison. That's partly because she draws on influences as diverse as jazz, country and 20th-century classical music to flavour her distinctive original songs.
But it's also because Morrison - described as "angel-voiced" by the Montreal Gazette - is also an arranger, choir director and teacher whose songs have been heard on Sesame Street and recorded by such artists as Penny Lang and Karen Young as well as children's musicians Fred Penner and Sharon, Lois and Bram. In fact, there isn't much in the world of folk music that Morrison hasn't done since she was galvanized by the discovery of a trove of Ella Fitzgerald records in her parents' basement when she was five. Over the last couple of decades, Morrison has performed across country-regionCanada and in the placecountry-regionU.S. at folk festivals, universities, clubs and concert halls and has been featured on such national CBC radio shows as Morningside. Morrison got her start as a performer in the 1970s and '80s, when she performed in duos with singer-songwriter Caitlin Hanford and jazz singer Karen Young. Since then, she has been in demand as a back-up vocalist and pianist on many albums, including one by children's superstar Raffi. Morrison has also written, sung and arranged more than 70 songs for the celebrated children's television programs Sesame Street and Boîte á lunch. For 12 years, she was director and musical arranger with Montreal's Yellow Door Tabernacle Choir, and her choral arrangements are used in choirs across Canada and the U.S.
In addition, Morrison has composed soundtracks for several documentary films. She now teaches choral ensemble at the National Theatre School of Canada. Recently, her exploration of Scottish and Irish musical traditions has inspired her to learn, teach and sing in the Gaelic language. Morrison now performs in a trio with musical cohorts Andrew Cowan (guitar) and Bill Gossage (bass).
Cindy Thompson-Butineau
Fiddle
Cindy's electrifying performances have earned her a reputation as one of Canada's premiere combination fiddle player/stepdancers. A former national Canadian stepdance champion and winner of numerous fiddle awards, she performs in her own inimitable style, full of spontaneity, fun and musical excellence. There is something for everyone in Cindy Thompson's fiddling as she draws from Irish, Scottish, Cajun, Country, Bluegrass and Canadian Old Tyme fiddle styles.
Originally from the Ottawa Valley, Cindy comes from a musical family. She started step-dancing at the age of six and fiddling when she was twelve. Largely self-taught, Cindy began under the influence of her grandpa, Robert Buck. She began experimenting herself, improvising to create a certain sound or flavour in a tune. In her teens, Thompson criss-crossed the country winning over judges and audience alike. Cindy won Canadian step-dancing championships and numerous fiddle awards; including those at the North American Fiddle Contests in Shelburne, Ontario. From an early age her performing skills were recognized and she participated in major festivals across Canada.
Cindy has a long history of memorable performances including The Tommy Hunter Show and The Rita MacNeil show on CBC TV. She has also performed live concerts nationally on CBC Radio - Canada and concert appearances with Symphony Nova Scotia, the Thunder Bay Symphony and also a highly successful performance with the Huronia Symphony in Barrie, ON.
Cindy's two recordings "Through the Gates" and "I can feel it in the air" have both received critical acclaim and airplay on local, national and international media including radio stations across Holland, France, Australia, The Netherlands, Ireland and England. Cindy has also received positive and enthusiastic Cd reviews in such media as Sing Out! and Dirty Linen magazines.
Cindy now spends the majority of her time as a fiddle and stepdance instructor in her home in Perkinsfield, Ontario. She is also well known as a fiddle teacher at various music camps including “Orangeville Fiddle Camp”.
Wherever she goes, Cindy's fun, enthusiastic approach builds an amazing rapport with her audience. Her contagious energy and superb technique take listeners on a musical adventure.
